We do Reballing BGA – Laptop Motherboard Repair

BGA stands for Ball Grid Array which is a type of microchip connection very used nowadays, where the chip has small solder points on its bottom, which are soldered directly to the motherboard. The chip is fitted and soldering is carried out in a steam chamber at approximately 180 degrees, a temperature at which the solder melts but which is still not enough to melt the other components on the motherboard, including the plastic connectors and chips, which withstand slightly higher temperatures. BGA is used by various components, including chipsets and memory chips, mainly intended for laptops. There is also a series of Via's C3 processor that uses this type of connection as a way to cut costs. Motherboards already come with soldered processors, but there is the inconvenience of not being able to upgrade the processor. Via calls the C3 in this format “EBGA”, where the “E” stands for “Enhanced”.

What causes this defect?

The problem is caused by the lack of lead in the solders, without lead in the solder to control the tin it starts to behave strangely on electronic circuit boards. On their own, the metallic coatings spontaneously generate microscopic filaments—between one and five microns in size, less than a tenth of the thickness of a human hair—that rise from the base. If these filaments grow enough to touch a circuit through which another electrical current passes, they can cause a short and damage the equipment.
